Born in Edinburgh,  Scotland with a womb mate named George (my twin brother) I grew up

having fond memories of my childhood spent in a beautiful city. Called the "Athens of the
North", Edinburgh has a castle downtown and a mile of flowering gardens.

At the tender age of five, my brother and I were "abandoned" by our mother.
We never had any nursery or preschool,

so in our minds, we couldn't understand it when we were dropped off at school one day. I
can still vividly remember screaming. In fact both of us did and a young girl, Maritia Petrie
whose mother was an invalid and who had obviously matured much more than us two babies,
told my mother, "Don't worry Mrs. Nicol, I'll look after them."
I did very well at school and constantly vied for the number 1 position in class with Norri
McDowell and Roger Nelson. I never found out until long after my mother died, but I won a
scholarship to The Royal High School, one of Edinburgh's top schools.
I can only assume that my mother didn't want to split my twin brother and me and, I'm sure
that, even although she wouldn't have to pay the fees, there would be many extra expenses
that our family could ill-afford.

At eleven years old, we sat an exam called the "11-plus exam". After the exam was over
there was the "Qualifying Dance." This was a dance to celebrate the end of the exams and,
at that tender age, we were required to invite one of the fairer sex to accompany us. This
was like a minor league prom and boy, I can still remember how nervous I was about asking a
girl to the dance. I can remember who were on my list too. Evelyn Learie, Hazel Nairn and
Linda Bird. Linda was my first choice and she accepted. Wow !   I was elated. I had know her
quite  while and I would say she was definitely my first love. I remember taking the bus to
pick her up (fortunately she lived just a 5 minute walk from school). And I stopped to buy
chocolates for her at a shop near her home.

I attended Leith Academy   Senior Secondary School and got a superb education there. My
son Alexander, who is 16 just told me that next year, he'll be taking geometry and pre-
calculus. I left  school at 15 and had already done, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. I
was great at English, French, Latin, even History and Mathematics  but, I just couldn't get
the hang of either Physics or Chemistry. They were just beyond me and, at that time and in
that school, teachers weren't as understanding as they are today. So, I decided to leave
school at 15 and get a job.

I got my first job with The Taxpayers' Agency at $7 per week. YES $7 per week.

After several office jobs, it was only after playing in a band that I found what I really
enjoyed doing - recording.

1979                                         Played guitar in a rock band Iron Virgin -(you can see lots of photos and hear the band if you clink on the link)
in the 70's  and recorded a couple of singles.

One, "Jet" written by Paul McCartney was almost a hit before Paul himself released it as a
single.
I wrote quite a few songs while with the band and the songwriting gradually became more
poetry. After meeting Sunny (from Wellington, Kansas)) in Edinburgh, I moved to Dallas in
September 1979 but have since divorced.

Anytime something major happened in my life, I would be inspired to write a poem about it.
When my mother died, I was motivated to write.

On Valentine's Day when my ex-wife was

1985                pregnant, I wrote "Blooming Valentine." I now have a fifteen year old son attending Jesuit
High School and a father couldn't ask for a finer son. Recently, I met the most beautiful
girl who inspired me to write "Sweet Nothings.......Words to Whisper in your Lover's Ear.' It
got to #1 on MP3.com's poetry charts last June and then again in August. One day over 800
people played it.
1999/2000                            Back in the scary days of Y2K when everyone here was going crazy stockpiling food,
water, generators etc and in fear that the world might end, Well, I had the most profound
trip of my life to Uganda. I landed in Kampala on New Year's eve to record the most
amazing, happy, joyous group of children I have ever known. They were all orphans, most of
their parents having died of AIDS. I was there to record their infectious, spirited joyous
songs. I produced a cd back in Dallas so that they might use it raise funds and awareness of
AIDS here in the US. I gladly donated my services to them to help them but I didn't realise
just what would happen by doiing that. I have been repaid a thousand times in many ways
and I am so thankful to them for teaching me so much and for showing me the most
beautiful souls I could only imagine. Children of Uganda Inspired by one beautiful girl who told me, "Ah mon ami.
Je t'aime tres beaucoup. Tu es mon pere. Je suis contente"  (Ah my friend. I love you very
much. You are my father. I am content)I wrote a poem "Sandra from Rwanda, the orphan
who adopted me."

I now have my own recording studio (Scotch Productions, Inc) and I thrive on recording as
many diverse things as possible. My bread and butter is radio and television commercials.
Recently I recorded one of the world's most renowned Erhu players ( a Chinese violin) at
Caruth Auditorium, also I recorded a Persian santur (zither-like instrument) in my studio.

The first public airing of my kilt was on Friday February 9th at Duke and Natasha Perry's wedding. It was held in the beautiful Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas. Having never worn the kilt before (we Scots always refer to it in the definite article), it was rather scary at first. But everyone loved it and some even wanted their pictures taken with me.
August 1st 2001
Duke & Natasha were so proud to announce the arrival of their delightful son, Nikolai. He is now the cutest little guy you could ever meet.
April 27th 2001
This was my debut as a poet/entertainer. What an Incredible experience, especially since I
had never done this ever before and there were over 60 people attended and who thoroughly enjoyed the show.
May 03 2001
Videotaped the tv show with Alex Burton. It was a blast. I really enjoyed it. The most difficult thing was reading Sweet Nothings to  Alex. I met a Harlequin Romance author named Leann Harris just before the show and she was quite interesting. Her daughter used to do Highland Dancing because of her asthma.
June 2001
At the end of May/June I went on an amazing trip to Bejing with the Dallas Asian American Youth orchestra (DAAYO) and I'll be videotaped both their performance and their trips to The Forbidden City, The Great Wall and the Ming Dynasty tomb.  When I got back from a long tiring day of videotaping, on the advice of some others, I called down to the check-in at the hotel to make an appointment for a massage. Well, imagine my surprise and delight when a few minutes later there was a knock on the door and there stood Wang Dong Dong, a beautiful Chinese girl. She was there to give me a massage ! Had I died and gone to heaven?   Nearly. You can see the lovely Chinese beauty here  Dong_Dong

Nov 10th 2001
was the beautiful setting for "Peace, Hope & Understanding" an afternoon event to raise funds for a "Peace Garden" Sheila had asked me to help find some musicians and Stan Richardson was there to play his beautiful Shakuhachi flute. Benita Arterberry sang in her beautiful tones "Lift Every Voice" - The Negro National Anthem at which everyone stood, and also "Amazing Grace". There were representatives from different faiths and churches who spoke: Islamic Caller called to Mecca; Erv Roorda-Presbyterian, Imam Shakoor-Islamic, Benita-
Lift Every Voice, Susan Madison-Unitarian, Dr. Harbans Lal-Sikh, Peggy Williams-Christian Scientist, Stan Richardson-Shakuhachi, Walter Travis-Washington Street Presb Mission, Beth Keenan-Tibetan Buddhist, Amanpreet - Sikh, Gordon Nicol - "Judge Not", Harmonium, Benita-Amazing Grace
Troy Dungan, the weatherman on Ch8, welcomed everyone and introduced the
participants. The weather turned out perfect and, although there weren't many there, it
was a wonderful event. Benita was so inspiring with her words and mentioned how she
and I were kindred spirits.
I did a pretty good job of reading my poem  and had quite a few requests for
copies of it afterwards. The black Muslims wanted a copy to print in their newsletter.
Jan 2002

Record Collector Magazine feature Iron Virgin in a ten page article about  bands of the 70's and 80's. The band I played in almost 30 years ago gets a full-page picture to lead this article about the Glam-Rock era.  Plus we get another picture and quarter page story inside. Fame at last : )
Sept 2002

Angus the Tartan Goat - A cd of Scottish stories written by Margo Fallis and read and produced by Gordon
Dec 2002

The Beautiful Sounds of Karigirwa Two years after being "adopted" by this most beautiful soul, I went back to visit her in Kampala, Uganda. While there, I recorded her singing in French, Lugandan, Swahili and English. You can hear her sing La Grande Afrique by clicking on the photo.
Jan 2003   I MC'd The Texas Scottish Clans of North Texas Burns' Supper. Every year, Robert Burns's birthday is celebrated the world over with a Burns' Supper where the traditional Scottish dish of haggis is given the honour of being piped in and served steaming hot to the guests. The evening was a resounding success!
Feb 2003   I was a guest on the Paul Slavens radio show, recorded at The MAC. I read a few poems and was well received.
June 2003

What a grrreat night it was in Arlington, Texas at The Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games. It was my job to introduce the crowd to the North Texas Caledonian Pipe Band and keep some banter going between tunes to give the boys a wee break from puffing their lungs out. I was delighted that there were quite a few friends in the audience who came to greet me afterwards.
June 2003

Angelika Theater - What an event !!! I only wish I had taken my camera. It was like the opening in Hollywood of some big movie. A piper was at the door skirling his pipes. An abundance of gorgeous women stunningly dressed. The movie was a riot ! Pure silly nonsense. A Monty Python-type spoof on Braveheart and I was the narrator. Dec 2004D

Another amazing trip to Africa. On my 2002 trip I had recorded Sandra singing and put together a cd of her singing in French, Lugandan (Uganda), Swahili and English. She has a gorgeous voice and people are just struck by the clarity and beauty of it. I told her I'd like to record more of her songs on this trip and she said she was going to do some songs with Ronald Kibirige who was part of The Tour of Light and who sang on a couple of the songs last time. Well, my trip this time was filled to capacity. As well as the Mama Africa cd, I did two video projects. Sandra and I took a taxi to Ronald's place and I wasn't prepared for the recording session that ensued. In a room 12' x 12' there were 15 musicians and me. For the full story click on cd cover.
